With 42 years of experience in the city, the restaurant "Doris", located in Barrio Puerto, offers homemade food, with a decoration that shows its passion for the great soccer team of Valparaíso, Santiago Wanderers.
We talked to María Angélica Clavijo, owner of the restaurant, who told us what is the secret to remain in the gastronomy of the port for so many years and how her passion for the team began.
Mrs. María, how was your restaurant born?
The restaurant was bought by my mother in 1980, but she died in 1989, so I didn't want to abandon it and I stayed in charge of it, because it is a restaurant with history, located in the historical center of the city and because it belongs to the Barrio Puerto Guild.
What does your restaurant offer that makes it so special?
The quality of the food, Doris is characterized by its homemade food, here we prepare casserole, beans, reineta and fish calugas which is our star dish, our customers come especially to eat that dish, in fact we advertise for free on the radio for the calugas.
What is the secret for the restaurant to last for so many years?
It is not easy to run a restaurant for 42 years, it has been quite hard, but we have moved forward, we have not let go of the moorings, we suffered the outbreak of the dockers which was terrible, then the social outbreak that thank God did not affect so much the sector here and then the pandemic, we were closed for 8 months, at the beginning we did delivery, which was terrible because we were not used to that system, it was another world for us, but we got ahead among all three of us in the kitchen. But thanks to SERCOTEC we have taken out projects and we have been able to survive and as a guild we are taking more projects forward.
Why did you decide to decorate the premises under the Wanderers concept?
I have been a Wanderer all my life, my grandparents took me to the stadium as a child, so all my life I was linked to Wanderers, my mother, my stepfather liked it, and so I began to decorate the restaurant with pennants, discs, photos. In fact, I have been a member of Wanderers for more than 30 years, I have a parchment of that, I will always be a Wanderer in good times and bad and by decorating the restaurant I show my love for the team.
Why is the restaurant called Doris?
Simply because it is cumbersome to change the name of a commercial establishment, so it stayed that way, because when my mother bought it, it already had that name, so it stayed that way because of its owner. People think I am Doris, they say to me: "Hello Aunt Doris!"; but that name has been there since the store was received.
Why should people from Buenos Aires visit Doris?
Because the attention is familiar, it is a port restaurant, where fresh food is served every day, we bring out about 50 menus daily for our customers.
In 2017 Doris restaurant was awarded the title of the best paila marina of the Port Neighborhood, an award given by former President Michelle Bachelet.
